The U.S. now has more beer styles and brands to choose from than any other beer market in the world. As of 2020, more than 8,000 breweries are responsible for the beer brands available in the U.S. It seems as if most craft beer enthusiasts have some kind of deep appreciation for the India pale ale (IPA). IPA’s are very filling in general so you cannot really drink 20 of them like a traditional lager which is personally why I am not a big fan of IPA’s.

Double IPAs, also called Imperial IPAs, are a much hoppier style of IPAs with alcohol content above 7.5 percent by volume.

So I became curious on why they are so popular. According to this cult like phenomenon of beer snobs these are the 3 main reasons for why IPA is so popular:

Keyword Facts: IPA

India Pale Ales originated in England and are brewed and sold all over the world. “IPA” is an initialism for India Pale Ale, a hoppy style of beer within the pale ale category.

In the United States, sales of IPAs have increased, helping drive the craft beer renaissance. In 2019 across all craft beer sales, IPAs account for the largest percentage of any style, at 31.5%.

As such, IPAs frequently top the lists of several beer awards annually. For example, Bell’s Brewery’s Two-Hearted Ale has been awarded the “Best Beer in America” for three consecutive years starting in 2017; in years prior, Two-Hearted Ale often placed second after another IPA, Pliny the Elder, a double IPA brewed by Russian River Brewing Company. The most awarded IPA to date is Goose Island IPA, with 6 medals.

Contemporary American IPAs are typically brewed with distinctively American hops. The most popular American hops are Citra, Cascade, Simcoe, Mosaic, and Centennial. Within the broad category of the American IPA, several sub-styles exist.

Learn more from Wikipedia
